5 Forgiving Houseplants for Complete Beginners

Houseplants do more than fill an empty corner. They soften hard lines, draw the eye towards the light and bring a sense of life into rooms that can otherwise feel still. The good news is that you do not need green fingers to keep them thriving, only a handful of forgiving species and a little understanding of what they actually want. Here are five plants we recommend again and again to anyone starting out.

The reliable five

  • Pothos trails happily from a shelf, tolerates low light and forgives the occasional missed watering. It is almost impossible to kill, which makes it the perfect first plant.
  • Snake plant stands tall and architectural, asks for very little water and copes with the dim corners other plants hate.
  • Spider plant grows quickly, produces charming baby plants you can pot on, and is wonderfully relaxed about light and watering alike.
  • ZZ plant has glossy leaves, stores water in its roots and shrugs off neglect, making it ideal for busy households.
  • Peace lily rewards a little more attention with elegant white blooms and tells you clearly when it is thirsty by drooping, then perks straight back up.

Getting the basics right

Most plant troubles come down to watering. The single most useful habit is to check the soil with a finger before reaching for the can. If the top few centimetres are dry, water generously and let the excess drain away. If it is still damp, wait. Far more houseplants die from kindness and overwatering than from thirst.

Placing them well

Group plants of similar needs together so caring for them becomes one easy task rather than many. Keep light lovers near windows and tuck the tougher species into the gloomier spots. Turn each pot a quarter every week or so, and the plants will grow evenly rather than leaning towards the glass.

Start with two or three of these, learn their rhythms, and you will soon find the confidence to bring home something a little more demanding.
